Apple is one of todays world leaders in the computer industry. An amazing accomplishment, considering that it was founded by two college dropouts back in 1976. When electronics wiz Steve Wozniak successfully built boxes that allowed him to make free long-distance phone calls, Steve Jobs convinced him to sell these boxes, thus forming a new business partnership that would last for years. Wozniak worked on another box – a circuit board to be used by computer hobbyists – in 1976. Jobs convinced him that they should start a company selling those boxes. That was how Apple Computer, Inc. came to be. The two Steves went on to sell 200 units of Wozniaks invention, which they named Apple I.

That same year, Apple started the personal computer revolution with the introduction of the Apple II. Apple II was the first micro-computer to feature colour graphics, which is probably why it reached sales of a million dollars by June of 1977. By the end of 1978, Apple has become one of the fastest-rising companies in the United States. And by the end of 1979, Apple saw an increase in their annual sales of 400%. And by the end of the year 1980, Apple Computer, Inc. went public.

September 1980 saw the release of the Apple III, but production of this model was discontinued in 1984 due to a number of defects and negative feedback. 1984 also witnessed the TV commercial that launched the very first Macintosh. Its best feature was a 3-inch disk drive that was the fastest at that time, even faster than the disk drive of the Apple II. By 1988, Apple has sold over a million Macs and developed software that can connect the Macintosh to IBM-based systems.

With the release of the PowerBook Series in 1991, Apple gained 21% of market shares less than six months after its release. Apple was evidently serious about creating a digital wave and riding it into the next century. In December 1996, 12 years after he left, Apple saw the return of Steve Jobs as a special advisor and finally as CEO in September 1997. In August of 1998, Apple saw the most visible indication that Jobs was back in his beloved company.

That was the time of the unveiling of the iMac, the sleek and colourful computer that showed the world what Apple is capable of in terms of design and functionality. The year 2001 marked another big step in the history of Apple when they released a whole new line of PowerMacs. The new PowerMacs came with two new applications: the iDVD and the iTunes. In October 2001, Apple finally released the iPod, its very first non-computer product in years. Because of its superior design and small size, the iPod carried a very high price, which was a huge gamble for Apple. Apparently, that was a smart gamble that definitely paid off.

January 2002 saw yet another reinvention of the desktop computer when Apple introduced the flat-panel iMac and the iPhoto. Apple marked history once more in January 2006 when they released the MacBook Pro and the new iMac, which were the first Apple computers to use the Intel Core Duo processor. By August that same year, the PowerMac, PowerBook, and iBook were retired and the entire line of Macs were transitioned to Intel processors. To replace them, Apple introduced the Mac Pro, the MacBook, and the MacBook Pro.

On January 9, 2007 the company officially dropped the word “Computer” from its name, thus becoming Apple, Inc., determined as they are to move beyond the manufacture of computers. With that name change came the release of the iPhone, which became so popular that Apple quickly became the worlds third largest supplier of mobile handsets. On January 27, 2010, after much speculation, Apple finally announced that they were launching the iPad. The iPad was finally released in the United States on April 3, 2010, initially selling 300,000 units. In May of the same year, Apple finally surpassed the market cap of rival Microsoft for the first time since 1989.
